✍️ The Design: Conceived by artist and activist Gilbert Baker in 1978 at the urging of Harvey Milk, the iconic Rainbow Pride Flag first flew at the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade on June 25, 1978.

Baker’s original hand-dyed design featured eight stripes, but production realities soon reshaped it. The pink stripe was dropped when hot pink fabric proved hard to source, and the turquoise stripe was later removed so the flag could be split evenly with three colors on each side when hung vertically from San Francisco streetlamps. By 1979, the standardized six-stripe horizontal layout became the universal symbol of LGBTQ+ liberation, community, and hope. 🏳️🌈

Gilbert Baker assigned a specific, uplifting meaning to every color on the spectrum:

🔴 The top red stripe represents life.

🟠 The orange stripe symbolizes healing.

🟡 The yellow stripe stands for sunlight.

🟢 The green stripe represents nature.

🔵 The royal blue stripe symbolizes harmony and serenity.

🟣 The bottom violet stripe represents spirit.

Flag Nerd Fact: Baker deliberately chose a rainbow because it is a natural spectrum of light that represents diversity without belonging to any single nation or group. Over the decades, this landmark banner paved the way for modern iterations like the Progress Pride flag, while remaining an enduring timeless classic.
